Matthieu van Riel paints images on the boundary of abstraction and figuration. In his studio he has a lot of photographs of mountains, woods, fields, seas and landscapes, taken during his travels in the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the Alps, France, and Italy. These photographs are the starting point for his paintings. His approach to landscape is a formal one; to paint the essence of landscape, to be aware of light and darkness, space and emptiness in landscape, and the particular flatness of the Dutch landscape. During the process of making the paintings, he is constantly reducing, simplifying the landscape objects and making the images schematic, conceptual and flatter.
