Gwenyth Fugard graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Fine Arts with a BA Hons Fine Art degree in 2013.
In this short time she has gone on to win the Signature Art Prize (2014) (painting category) and was long listed for the Griffin Art Prize in 2013. Her work was exhibited at Somerset House as part of the National Open Art Exhibition in September and October 2014.
Fugard’s work is created within a system of criteria and boundaries set in place and observed while navigating the neutrality of the square format. Interventions and obstructions are imposed during the coverage of paint, ink and the folding of canvas, leaving trace and separation evident. The illusionary space created remains ambiguous while suggesting the depiction of an existing condition or dynamic.
Line and colour are minimal, borders appear to be corroding while other zones remain solid. This non-representational work provokes the viewer to decipher or unravel a code.
Fugard creates the illusion of openness and space within the surface of the canvas and creates the notion of multiple options yet to be configured.
