Matthieu van Riel paints images on the boundary of abstraction and figuration. In his studio he has a lot of photographs of mountains, woods, fields, seas and landscapes, taken during his travels in the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland,  and the Alps. These photographs are the starting point for his paintings. His approach to landscape is a formal one; to paint the essence of landscape, to be aware of light and darkness, space and emptiness in landscape, and the particular flatness of the Dutch landscape. During the process of making the paintings, he is constantly reducing and simplifying elements of the landscape, making them more schematic and conceptual as well as much flatter.
