Appleby’s drawings amplify each environment’s simplicity and purity with an aim of clarification. These clean minimal spaces offer little information yet have an authority to describe a magnitude. The non-narrative architectural spaces make enquiries of the memory, knowledge and experience of human space.

Wright/Holon

Jemma Appleby’s work is an investigation into the complex relationship between architecture and landscape.

The forest landscape is used as a haven for solitude and calmness, where the slightest change can result in phenomenological moments which twist the already sublime environment into moments of questioning.

As with the forest, architecture has been a focus in the work, referencing utopias and enriched futures. Architectural forms have been used to explore the themes of shelter and protection by generating structures of physical impossibility. Initially the structures integrated into the landscape are based on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian houses. They give the illusion of a structure offering refuge, however they are no more than geometric planes creating a facade. It is our desire to be protected in an unknown environment which allows the audience to believe these constructions are complete dwellings.

Elements of space, volume and structure are heightened in order to allow landscape to become the architecture in a harmony of imbalance. They have become entwined and play with the perception of reality and illusion by creating a relationship between encounter of the natural world and invention.
